A Study on the Welfare Attitude of Seoul Citizens using the Latent Class Analysis
Kim Sa-Hyun

Hong Kyung-Zoon
Abstract
This article aims to identify the types of supporters toward welfare policies among Seoul citizens and to explore how they are structured. Latent Class Analysis(LCA) is used for this study, and the results are as follow. Firstly, Seoul citizens¡¯ welfare attitudes are divided into three latent supporter types and each of them is named: the welfare expansion supporters, the national minimum supporters, and the undecided respectively. Secondly, about two-third of Seoul citizens was classified as the latent welfare expansion supporters. This results make us expect a positive future of the welfare service for Seoul citizens. However, there is the significant dissonance between the welfare attitude and the political behavior; there are numerous constraining factors in process of institutionalization. Therefore, it is doubtful whether the latent support of welfare expansion could possibly lead to substantive welfare development or not. Thirdly, the welfare attitudes of Seoul citizens are affected more by social norm than by self-interest.
